چکیده

OVERVIEW There has been little research on the importance of Seasonally Frozen Ground (SFG), including permafrost, to many of the major processes in mountain environments. One reason has been the difficulty in measuring and estimating the areal extent of surface frost that occurs under seasonal snowpacks. Here we present preliminary evidence from the Colorado Front Range suggesting that SFG has disproportionately large effects on hydrological, ecological, and geomorphic processes. Our intent is to bring attention to the importance of SFG and to spur those in other regions to begin or expand research and monitoring programs on SFG in the western US.

Changes of climate and seasonally frozen ground over the past 30 years in Qinghai–Xizang (Tibetan) Plateau, China

Air temperature, ground surface temperature (GST; 0 cm at depth), precipitation and freezing depth data at 50 meteorological stations in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP) were analyzed to examine changes of climate and seasonally frozen ground (SFG) in the past 30 years. The latitude, longitude, elevation, mean annual air temperature (MAAT), annual precipitation (AP) and maximum freezing depth at...

Gypsiferous Aridisols are of great importance and extent in arid and semi-arid environments. There is a close relationship between soil genesis and landscape positions. This study aimed to determine the genesis and classification of gypsiferous soils and to investigate the relationship between micro-and macro-morphology of gypsum crystals and geomorphic positions in Rafsanjan area. The study ar...

Ecosystem processes at the watershed scale: Mapping and modeling ecohydrological controls of landslides

a r t i c l e i n f o Mountain watersheds are sources of a set of valuable ecosystem services as well as potential hazards. The former include high quality freshwater, carbon sequestration, nutrient retention, and biodiversity, whereas the latter include flash floods, landslides and forest fires. Each of these ecosystem services and hazards represents different elements of the integrated and co...

Response of conifers to UV-B and climate in mountain areas

The present study was focused to examine the combined effects of climate and ultraviolet-B radiation on conifer tree-ring density. Statistical methods were employed to extract tree responses in annual ring density and to identify functional relationship in trees when the level of ultraviolet-B radiation changes regardless of climate variations. In this study, the consideration was given to the ...
